Nokia planning 16-lens array camera for Lumia phones, Lytro-style photography coming

Nokia's big talking point with Lumia has always been its camera technology and it looks as though Lytro-style, focus-after-shooting technology is on the horizon. Jo Harlow, Nokia's executive vice-president for smartphone business, has yet again hinted at a 16-lens camera for new Lumia phones.
We first heard about the complex 16-lens smartphone cameras when we learnt Nokia was planning to invest in Pelican Imaging, the company behind the technology. It works by placing 16 lenses in a 4 x 4 grid, each of which has its own small sensor dedicated to one of the red, green and blue colours that make up a digital colour image. Once an image is captured, those 16 lens layers then re-assemble everything into one piece of information. The ability to compare similar colour layers of information means image noise can be reduced by offsetting one layer against another and thus you have a picture with much less noise than the smartphone competition.
But that's not all. On top of this, it's also possible to re-focus the picture selectively, just like a Lytro camera. The technology isn't planned for release until 2014, with Pelican Imaging saying it should be coming to at least one phone next year.
Rajat Agrawall of BGR says Nokia's Harlow continues to push the "computational photography" concept behind Pelican's imaging technology and explained: "If you look at where imaging is going, computational imaging is an area of exploration. Being able to capture even more data - data you cannot even see with the human eye that you can only see by actually going back to the picture and being able to do things with them.
"I think that is a key challenge to bring to a smartphone because computational imaging or computational photography requires computational power. That was one of the limitations in bringing that kind of experiences on a smartphone. Changes in the processing capabilities of smartphones opens it up as an area of exploration."
As of yet, the only Nokia phone said to contain this kind of class-leading technology is the rumoured EOS. While no release date or further details about the device have been made official, it sounds like Nokia has even bigger things planned with its smartphone cameras.
In other news, Harlow also mentioned the need for dual SIM slots in its Lumia phones, so expect them to make an appearance soon enough.

Microsoft shares another glimpse of the future, but you still can’t have it

At TechFair 2013 in Washington D.C., Microsoft showed off an abundance of high-tech projects; the company states that the technology being designed by its research division, allows a glimpse into the future of technology. World class scientists working on the Redmond campus showed off how they could be an asset to some of society’s biggest challenges.
Fred Humphries, Microsoft VP of U.S. Government Affairs, stated that:
“At Microsoft, investing in research and development are top priorities as we continue to spark American innovation while creating the jobs and technologies of the future… From pushing the boundaries of computing beyond the screen to helping make sense of large-scale data sets for scientific discoveries, we’re excited to share the latest innovations from Microsoft Research with the D.C. community at TechFair.”
Take a look below for some of the technologies Microsoft flaunted:
Automated Problem Generation for Education: Microsoft’s Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) showed off the benefits of Computer-aided education. The system can generate a personalized workflow to help students with problem solving. The system is able to help with logic problems, sentence completion, procedural mathematics, algebraic proofs, and more. Click here to learn more.
Kinect Fusion: Research techniques for quickly and affordably recreating accurate 3D renderings of people and objects. The system takes advantage of a six depth of field position from a depth sensing camera, such as Microsoft’s Kinect. Click here to learn more.
Project “GeoFlow” for Excel: GeoFlow is an Excel plugin that allows a 3D visual representation of data that can then be shared with others. This project is the only one available for download; you can grab the preview here (Excel 2013 required).
Real-Time, 3D Scene Capture and Reconstruction: Another project devoted to creating 3D renderings, this one captures several color images to build a high resolution “voxelization” of the surface. The project takes advantage of the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to power the process. Click here to learn more.
SandDance: A web based information visualization system that uses 3D hardware acceleration to “explore relationships between hundreds of thousands of items”.  SandDance focuses on natural user interaction techniques such as touch screens and Kinect. Click here to learn more.
ViralSearch: Microsoft wants to be able to track the latest hits and newest meme. ViralSearch is an attempt to look at large quantities of data and decide what may be “going viral”. Click here to learn more.
A badass
SketchInsight: An interactive whiteboard for “storytelling” that uses data in real time. Simply sketch a chart and it will be auto populated with relevant data. (This is one of my favorite, so check out the video)Click here to learn more.

Microsoft takes on the iPad yet again, in its latest tablet commercial

Microsoft isn't letting up on its release of commercials shunning the iPad and touting its own Windows RT Tablets.
The latest commercial from Redmond compares the thin form factor of the ASUS VivoTab (.32 inches) vs. the iPad’s .37 inches. Microsoft also doesn’t forget to point out the weight of the lighter ASUS tablet (1.16 lbs.) vs. the iPad’s 1.44 lbs.
After drooling over the ASUS' hardware and mentioning that you don’t need a micro SD card adapter, as the VivoTab has one built in, Microsoft begins to talk about their own operating system’s capabilities. Windows RT’s ability to multitask in snap view and ability to print to a larger array of printer’s without the need of Airplay, are all mentioned.
Sure, the company doesn't mention the lack of Windows Store apps, but it’s a Microsoft commercial, so get used to it.
Check out the latest commercial!

Ulster Bank bowing to Windows Phone demand, looking at creating an app

image
Last we heard about Ulster Bank the company was appearing rather obstinate, saying they were are of demand for a Windows Phone app but “had no plans to introduce this.”
It seems a lot can change in a month, and attitudes have softened, and most recently, when asked about a Windows Phone app the company’s support on Twitter said:
@kc_evinarter Hi Kevin, our development team are looking at this as they are aware of the demand. MC
With both parent companies, Natwest and RBS, already having Windows Phone apps it seems it just took a bit of pressure for Ulster bank to change their mind.
The move suggests Windows Phone users should not just suffer in silence, but should make their voice heard, as it seems in the end it is the squeaky wheel which gets the oil.

Nokia Lumia 521 back in stock in the HSN, see how they sell them

The Home Shopping Network has the Nokia Lumia 521 back on sale in their online store.
The handset is available for $150 commitment free, and comes with a free screen protector and car charger.
When last on sale there the 400 handsets the company had available sold out in only a few minutes.  Interestingly the video above gives us a good idea of their hard sell, which touches on many of the features of the handset, and certainly shows the HSN knows how to sell almost anything.
See the device at the HSN here.

Pre-paid Nokia Lumia 521 sells out on T-Mobile

image
It seems demand is remaining high for Nokia’s low-end wonder, with the pre-paid version of T-Mobile’s Nokia Lumia 521 selling out in their online store.
This follows the handset also selling out when offered on the Home Shopping Network in a few minutes  and Walmart in a day, with Greg Sullivan recently saying Walmart had to request a second order.
Looking at T-Mobile’s line-up of 19 pre-paid handsets it is not difficult to see why the device is moving however.
The only two devices anywhere close in price would be the T-Mobile Comet and T-Mobile Concord, one with a 2.8 inch and the other with a 3.5 inch screen, 2 megapixel camera and Android 2.2 and 2.3.
With Nokia actually creating low-end handsets that do not suck, Windows Phone may be able to earn the respect of a whole new young demographic, that will hopefully move on to more powerful Windows Phones in the future.

ZBand silent vibrating alarm accessory supports Windows Phone

zband1ZBand is a pretty niche product – designed to wake users up gently by vibration on their wrist rather than the harsh sound of a normal alarm clock.  This makes it ideal for users who have to wake a lot earlier than their partners or those who do not want to wake small children or babies who sleep in close proximity.
In the very simple product the alarms are set in a rather sophisticated way – over Bluetooth from a smartphone. The good news is that the accessory explicitly supports Windows Phone, with an app a Windows Phone 8 app in the store.
The band is also relatively cheap at 39.99 Euro and is shipping now to more than 30 countries.
The main weakness of the product is likely its 10 day battery life – for something as critical as an alarm I suspect a backup may be required for when one forgets to charge the bracelet, which is done via microUSB.
The device does not support iOS yes, with the developer saying:
“At the moment we are focused on Windows Phone and Android. Apple run a closed system when it comes to hardware and we’d need to access their Bluetooth systems for compatibility and so that will take time.

Nokia Shows Improvement In American Customer Satisfaction Index

US Nokia Durability List
Nokia has gained a point in the recently released in American Customer Satisfaction Index report. Nokia always struggled to make both market and brand presence in US when compared to other countries. With recent release of Windows Phone devices, Nokia is now focusing on US market more than event. The reported American Customer Satisfaction Index shows the work in progress as Nokia gained 1 point to 76 up form 75 in last year’s report.
It is of note that Nokia’s Windows Phones are outscoring HTC’s Android handsets and matching Samsung’s and of course is far ahead of Blackberry.
Meanwhile, Microsoft lost one point to score 74 down from 75 last year. ACSI commented the following on Microsoft’s decline in score.
With global PC shipments having their largest quarterly drop in 20 years, the market remains thorny. Windows 8, criticized by users for its interface, has not derailed customer satisfaction for Microsoft, but it has not helped either.

Nokia demoes Joblens on the Nokia Lumia 925 (video)

Nokia has spoken about Joblens before – their augmented reality app which makes it easier for Lumia owners to find employment.
Nokia has now finally showed off the app to O2Guru who posted the above video, and demonstrates that the app is surprisingly sophisticated,  not just overlaying potential jobs on a map, but it will also show you potential accommodation, salary ranges and whether any of your friends work in the area or for that employee.
The app will even allow users to submit their CV, and utilizes data from LinkedIn and Facebook.
The app is expected to debut on the Nokia Lumia 925, and will hopefully also become available to all Lumia owners eventually.

3rd Party Vine app in works fo WP8 platform

                                                    Vine
Young Windows Phone developer Graham Smith from Texas has been working on a third party Vine app for Windows Phone. Vine is currently on available for iOS, and is an application that allows you to share very short 6 second videos; similar to gifs in some respects.
In a blog post, Graham notes his progress so far:
Progress on my 3rd-party Vine app (made using Vine’s private API documented here) is as follows:
Complete
•Login (including saving username / password — encrypted of course)
•Primary Timeline
•Popular Timeline
•Comments (including mentioning)
•Likes
Work In Progress
•Improved UI / UX (metro or bust)
•Live Tile w/ Powered by Background Agent
•Search (People & Hashtags)
•Hashtag Timelines
The State of Uploading
As for uploading, this is a trickier subject. I’ve been having issues with with upload feature because instead of going through their private API, they upload Vines (is that what we call them?) straight to their AWS.
While Vine may not be technically impressive, like Instagram. It is important to note that Vine is not available for Android at this time. Will you use Vine if it comes to Windows Phone 8?

image
Citrix Receiver is an app which lets you access your enterprise files, applications, and desktops  on the go as if you are in the office.
The app existed for Windows Mobile, and was finally announced for Windows Phone earlier today at the Citrix Synergy event.
The enterprise app has been long awaited and will allow Windows Phone users to remote desktop into their office, amongst other features.
The app has not yet hit the Windows Phone Store soon, but I think we will not have too long to wait for the download link.

Microsoft Hiring Several Thousand Workers In China For Windows Phone And Azure Efforts

WindowsPhonechina.jpg
Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer today announced that Microsoft will hire several thousand workers in China to support new Windows Phone devices and new cloud computing services based on Windows Azure. Microsoft is planning to expand its workforce from a current base of 4,000 staff in China. The expansion will take place during the next year.
“I visited China last about one year ago in May and it is remarkable to me how much has changed,” Ballmer, 57, said. “At Microsoft this is an incredibly exciting time.”
As China has become the largest smartphone market in the world, it’s an obvious move by Microsoft to focus on localized efforts on Windows Phone in China to increase sales.

Microsoft takes on Apple in its latest Windows 8 ad

Microsoft has been busy pushing out commercials that show their latest operating system can do more than just play games. The latest ad from Redmond doesn’t just put on a suit and tie to strut its work capabilities, it makes fun of Apple’s iPad in the process.
The commercial opens with a side by side of ASUS’s VivoTab and the world famous fruit tablet. Microsoft’s minimalist approach is very reminiscent of Apple’s commercials and makes it clear that this is a parody right down to the musical chopstick routine.
Our favorite virtual assistant, Siri, narrates the entire show, commenting on everything that she can’t do that Windows 8 tablets can. Live tiles, side by side applications, and PowerPoint slides are all touched upon.
Microsoft also doesn't forget to mention that an ASUS VivoTab 64 GB at $449 is much cheaper than Apple's iPad 64 GB at $699.

Microsoft Updates Youtube App for WP8

In the wake of Google complaints about the YouTube app for Windows Phone 8, Microsoft today revealed that they have modified the app to address those complaints. The new version of the app is available from the Windows Phone Store, or soon will be.
“Microsoft updated the Windows Phone YouTube app to address the restricted video and offline video access concerns voiced by Google last week,” a Microsoft representative told. “We have been in contact with Google and continue to believe that our two companies can work together to hone an app that benefits our mutual customers, partners and content providers. We’re earning new customers every day, with IDC reporting recently that Windows Phone posted the largest year-over-year gain among leading operating systems. We look forward to working with Google to maintain a great YouTube experience for the growing number of people who rely on both of our respective products.”
Microsoft originally released the excellent YouTube app for Windows Phone 8 earlier this month. But a week later, at Google I/O, Google CEO Larry Page issued a bizarre and hypocritical attack on Microsoft, claiming that the firm was taking advantage of Google service interoperability features. Google sent a cease-and-desist order to Microsoft, demanding that it immediately remove the YouTube app from the Windows Phone Store because it “allows users to download videos from YouTube, prevents the display of advertisements in YouTube video playbacks, and plays videos that our partners have restricted from playback on certain platforms (e.g., mobile devices with limited feature sets).”
At the time, Microsoft revealed that it was Google, not Microsoft, that was the problem.
“Google has refused to work with us to develop a [YouTube] app on par with other platforms,” Microsoft said last week. “Since we updated the YouTube app to ensure our mutual customers a similar YouTube experience, ratings and feedback have been overwhelmingly positive.  We’d be more than happy to include advertising but need Google to provide us access to the necessary APIs. In light of Larry Page’s comments today calling for more interoperability and less negativity, we look forward to solving this matter together for our mutual customers.”
Will the new app release mollify Google?  They claim to want to end the negativity. This would be a good first step.
The new version of the YouTube app for Windows Phone 8 will be available soon.

HERE Maps gets big update with new LiveSight feature

The last update we got to HERE Maps was way back in late March. Those updates were mostly little bug fixes and nothing major. Today however, HERE Maps gets an impressive new feature called LiveSight. Let’s check it out.
Two things are new with the latest update (version 3.3.354.8) for HERE Maps. Two fairly nice additions:
  • LiveSight reveals what’s around you through your camera display
  • Integrated compass shows you which way you’re facing so you can oriented quickly
Here Maps
LiveSight is a feature that we first saw last fall, but it’s finally available in HERE Maps. LiveSight is feature that would become incredibly handy during travels in relatively new cities. Or just to discover new locations around you that you might not have been aware of.
You can grab the update for HERE Maps right here in the Store, by using the QR code below, or swiping to the right in our app.

Telstra promotes the hell out of Windows Phone, with video to prove it

We’ve heard a lot of discussion from users, mostly anecdotal, about their local carriers and how well they are promoting Windows Phone in the store. Some are horror stories, with reps pushing Android or the iPhone while often there are great experiences too.
Telstra though as evidently set the bar with their in-store advisements.
In fact, it’s so good that Microsoft has made a video in conjunction with the popular carrier to highlight their effort. It’s quite the achievement to see Windows Phone promoted in such a way and while US carriers like AT&T and Verizon are getting serious about putting Windows Phone front and center, we think Telstra here sets a great example.
Verizon Lumia 928 Promotional material
Verizon Lumia 928 in-store promo material
Speaking of, Verizon is getting aggressive here with the Lumia 928—a phone you can tell that they are very proud of with the amount of commercials we’re seeing on TV. We even ran into a Nokia rep handing out promotional materials in our local Verizon store, giving us hope yet that Windows Phone will have a good run on that carrier.

Digitimes claims Nokia is exploring a phablet for 2014

Digitimes claims Nokia is in discussion with suppliers for a possible large screened handset for 2014.
They note that following the release of various-sized 6-inch and larger handsets from Asia-based vendors such as Huawei and Samsung , Nokia is reportedly in discussion about making larger-size handsets that may be released in the next year.
Phablets give phone OEMs an opportunity to compete with 7 inch tablet producers like Acer while still remaining in their comfort zone.
Such a tablet will presumably require a higher resolution screen such as 1080P, a feature which is believed to be coming to Windows Phone towards the end of the year as part of the GDR 3 update. There have however also been rumours of a so-called Nokia Max 625, which was a low-end Windows Phone 8 handset with a 4.7 inch WVGA screen for emerging markets, who more often use their phone as their only computer, and appreciate the increased screen size more.
Nokia’s phablet has been rumoured previously by sources as reputable as the Financial Times, so it seems pretty likely Windows Phone will go beyond 5 inches sooner rather than later.

Nokia Details Investments In Imaging Start-ups – Remember Pelican, Luminate and InVisage

Nokia Pelican Imaging
Nokia today detailed some of its investments in next generation imaging start-ups through Nokia Growth Partners(NGP). They listed three start-ups which inclused Pelican Imaging, Luminate and InVisage.
Here are the short descriptions about each of them,
Pelican Imaging:
The Pelican technology, based on combining signals from arrays of sensors, enables very slim camera modules with the ability to capture depth and stereo information. The user will effectively be able to change focus of individual objects after taking a photograph. Thanks to intelligent software they can even remove unwanted objects.
The technology can also combine regular image sensing with infrared, meaning images can be shot literally in the dark without the need for a flash. Check out the technology in action.
Luminate:
Luminate, images are being made a lot smarter. With 3D information, geolocation, time of day, weather, tags for the people in the photographs – future photographs will be a lot more intelligent. Luminate can help to categorise and catalogue all that information, and we will see common image formats being replaced by new standards and file formats capable of handling it all.
InVisage:
InVisage is another exciting imaging company already in NGP’s investment portfolio. It’s developing new image sensing technology that has the potential to deliver smartphone image sensors that boast a resolution of hundreds of millions of pixels – better than the human eye. It means that photographs could be sharper, clearer and better than ever before.
Nokia believes these investments will help them define the smartphone imaging future along with their in-house work on mobile imaging.

Itsdagram to soon support private Instagram profiles, now the best selling paid app on Windows Phone

image
Itsdagram, the best of an increasing number of Windows Phone Instagram clients, will soon be getting an update to support both Private and Public profiles, meaning users will be able to interact with all of their friends.
itsdagramqrThe app will also be able to approve follow requests, and will add some UI fixes, hopefully fixing that grey on black comment text snafu which makes reading comments nearly impossible.
Version 1.8 is currently out in beta, and will hopefully hit the Windows Phone store soon.
The app is now the best selling paid app in the Windows Phone store, and the free, ad-supported version of the app is also still on its way, and was previously promised for some time this week.
If you cant wait, the current version off the app can be found in the Windows Phone Store for $1.49.
Update: Daniel has revealed to Neowin that his app has seem more than 22,500 downloads which sounds like a pretty good return on investment :)

Windows 8.1 RT leak suggests Windows Phone Blue will get VPN, Bluetooth 4 and LE support and much more

2013-05-12_11-02-26_6cffa096-62d7-4644-b728-af9d9de2d74b
Justin Angel has been dissecting leaked images of Windows 8.1, including the RT version of the OS, which shares much communality with Windows Phone, and which in the next version of Windows Phone is expected to present a near identical API surface and environment to developers.
A Microsoft Job posting from February for example states the Windows Phone team is…
leading the charge to bring much of the WinRT API surface and the .NET Windows Store profile to the Phone.
There is therefore good reason to believe the new features of Windows RT will also be coming to Windows Phone Blue.
According to Justin Angel this will include support for Bluetooth 4, via RFComm and and Bluetooth Low Energy via the GATT profile.
Windows RT will then support a wide range of accessories, such as heart rate meters, blood glucose monitors, activity monitors and an increasing range of sensors.
Justin notes Windows RT will also soon support VPN, saying Microsoft is adding a whole new Windows.Networking.vpn namespace to help deal with VPN in WinRT apps.
Also welcome is a new API for Low Lag Cameras, which will enable developers to more easily capture HDR pictures.
Other useful APIs that will probably come to Windows Phone is a geofencing API, where apps can register to be activated when a user enters or leaves an area.  Apps will also now have access to writing Playlists on Windows , which would fill a massive hole in the anaemic media player on Windows Phone.
Another feature, which may be paired with Micracast support (evidence for which was found by some-one else) is the ability to send a different image to an external screen from what is displayed on the screen, allowing the many Airplay scenarios we already see on iOS.
Of course there is no guarantee all or any of these features will be coming to Windows Phone, but everyone of us think Justin’s exploration has given us the best peek yet at Windows Phone’s future.
Read much more at his website here.
