Microsoft claims, Traditional gaming platforms still dominate

Xbox maker releases figures that show consoles made 42 per cent of gaming revenues

Traditional platforms still account for more over 72 per cent of money spent on gaming, figures from Microsoft show.

Analysts have recently questioned the business sense of launching new consoles when social and browser based gaming, along with tablets and smartphones are increasingly eating into traditional gaming.

However, Microsoft's figures are a rebuke to that suggestion.

They showed that consoles are still the most popular gaming platform by far, accounting for 42 per cent of all revenues. According to Microsoft, consoles generated $27 billion last year.

The next largest platform is PC, which accounted for $12 billion of the revenue generated in the games industry.

Handheld gaming, however, has been overtaken by the new formats.

According to Microsoft's figures, handheld gaming accounted for $8 billion of revenue, while tablet and smartphone gaming, and social and browser based gaming accounted for $10 billion and $8 billion respectively.

It adds that more than $1 billion people play games globally, and that software profits hit $12.1 billion.
